Bridal Shower Games - Choosing Successful Ones

by Debbie L

Writing bridal shower invites and having the shower itself are perhaps the most fun events a bride to be will have in the last few weeks before her wedding. There are so many stresses from planning the catering, to putting together and completing and bridal invitations list, to all the other responsibilities that the bridal shower is a welcome break. The games are also important for the bride, but also for the guests, and there are many to choose from. If, for instance, it's a fancy party, the centerpiece could be randomly awarded by placing an envelope under a random chair.

A frequently enjoyed variety of bridal shower games involves wordplay. A popular diversion is called "Finish the Phrase." It uses well known terms, phrases, and sayings, sometimes something particularly appropriate to a wedding or to the party guests. One might start with "Too many cooks" and then wait for someone to respond "spoil the broth." Give a prize to the person who wins the most rounds.

Another fun game that can put the bride to be in the "hot seat" is the "How Well do you know your Hubby" game. This requires about 20-30 questions to be asked of the groom beforehand, and can range from innocent questions like "What's his favorite color" to more racy questions like "Boxers or briefs." For every incorrect answer, the bride to be has to chew a piece of gum. Depending on how well she knows her fiance, she may end up speechless!

A list of time-honored bridal shower games would never be complete without a mention of clothespin games. One way to play is simply to pick a wedding-related word that will probably come up many times in conversation such as "married," "dress," or "bride." Each player gets 3 to 5 clothespins when they arrive, and every time someone catches someone else using the word, they can take one of their clothespins At the end of the shower, the guest with the most clothespins wins.

If you have a very active group that knows most everyone else, then "Rate the Advice" may be a good choice. Have everyone anonymously write down advice about any aspect of the wedding, wedding night, or married life. Have everyone rank each piece of advice on a 1-10 scale, and tally them up. Awards could be given to both the highest ranked woman, and the lowest if you want to include more prizes.

Bridal shower games are meant to enhance the fun atmosphere of the shower. There are ice breaker games for the start of the shower so people can get to know one another. There are also closing games, such as recording advice for the future bride and groom. No matter how simple or complex, if the game makes people laugh and have fun, then it is a success.

The bridal shower is usually a welcome break for most brides who have been under a lot of stress from the wedding planning. It is a time to be with friends and to have fun. There are games, good food, prizes, and of course, gifts! The bridal shower invites should reflect the theme and tone of the party. Bridal invitations should be mailed to her, with another copy or two reserved for her scrapbook. A frequently enjoyed variety of bridal shower games involves wordplay. These games are meant to enhance the fun atmosphere of the shower.
