The modern alternative to the humble picnic basket is of course the ubiquitous cooler. Coolers typically can hold larger amounts of food, and are designed to keep food fresher and cooler for longer, especially when ice is added to the box. On a hot summer's day, a cooler is probably a better option, especially if there are more than two people going on a picnic.
