Wall Stencils Question And Answer
A good paint to stencil onto semi-gloss wall? Local lumber store gave me craft paint- not thick enough?
Well, the guy at the hardware store gave me Rustoleum craft paint- figuring it would cover semi-gloss.
Hardly.
Thin as all get out.
Now, I gave the paint 22 hours to dry, in 65% humidity, to be fair. Still, the paint seems to be too thin or based in something that won't adhere right.
Is there an inexpensive paint besides a whole quart of semi-gloss that will cover semi-gloss?
Thanks!

go to wall mart in the craft section, usually in the back. there are various wide selections of stencil paints, usually in packs of lil pots and various colors but if you want one specific color they have those too, in like 4oz. bottles, about 1.88 or something.I have lots and i stenciled my lil' girls room on a semi-gloss wall, it is plenty thick and actually used a lil water on some parts for effect.
Do you have a Hobby Lobby, a Michaels or Ben Franklin craft store in your area, check there. If all else fails, check with Lowes and Home Depot. they have started to sell what they call SAMPLES packs of the paint colors you can use the semi gloss samples
The guy at the paint store gave you bad advice. Rustoluem is a oil based enamel, it's great if you want to paint your lawn furniture. Go to a good paint store or art supply store and get some water based acrylic stencilling paint it come in small bottles, they should have all brushes, stencils all kinds of kits there. Home Depot or Lowe's probably carry all you need. Stencil paint is a thicker paint more like a gel or paste so your perception are correction about the oil paint being to thin. The oil paint may take a while to dry usually over night. Hopefully you won't have to repaint.
